4 Corners - Almost

Sometime in the early 70's, I remember visiting 4 corners. It was on one of our yearly family vacations. This trip took us through southern Utah, and down to the Grand Canyon. My Uncle Lawrence, Aunt Nancy, and their kids tagged along with us that year.

The next time I visited 4 corners was in 1998. It was another family vacation, this time my kids and I were headed to Ruidoso, New Mexico with Grandma & Grandpa A., Donnetta, Randy & Kim & their families. Here are some pictures from that day at 4 corners:

Mmmmmm!! I can almost smell the fry bread....
And then today, I hear & read the following on KSL:

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Tourists who want to put a hand or foot in each of four states at the Four Corners area are apparently off the mark -- by about 2.5 miles.

According to readings by the National Geodetic Survey, the Four Corners marker showing the intersection of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah is about 2.5 miles west of where it should be.

The only place in the United States where four state boundaries come together was first surveyed by the U.S. government in 1868 during the initial survey of Colorado's southern boundary line.

The intended location was 109 degrees west longitude and 37 degrees north latitude. But, because of surveying errors, the popular tourist spot is a bit off.

The accurate location would be downhill to the east of U.S. 160 in Colorado and northeast of the San Juan River as it flows into New Mexico.

HA!! how funny is that. I still feel like I've "been there, done that" even if it wasn't the true spot.

I've never been there or done that, so now I can go to the right place!

I've never been there, but when I go I'm still counting it! If there's a marker, it counts!
