Conversations & Events That The Mind Remembers From Long Ago...

I don't know why, but yesterday I kept thinking about things that happened a long time ago. It made me wonder why some experiences make such an impression on you, that you remember them for the rest of your life.

I remember being very young, when we lived in our old house at 247 East Main. Randy and I were in the bathroom washing our hands before we ate lunch. I remember very vividly, Randy telling me as we were standing at the sink, that in some places of the world, there are people so poor, they can't afford to buy peanut butter!

I remember being in kindergarden. One day Shannon Rydalch told Jack Zollinger that she had a ghost in a bottle at home. The next day Maxine Lamprecht pulled Shannon aside and told her that Jack's mother said that story really scared Jack and he hadn't been able to sleep that night. I remember Maxine saying to Shannon: "You really don't have a ghost in a bottle at home, do you?" She made Shannon tell Jack she was sorry for telling that story. I also heard Shannon when she was telling that story, but it didn't make me afraid to go to sleep at night. I just remember thinking how neat it would be to have a ghost in a bottle.

I remember my sisters playing with matches. When my mom found out, she made them go to the store and they each had to buy a big box of stick matches. (I wonder if a kid could get away with doing that today?) Then they had to sit out by the back step and light every match and let it burn down to their fingers. I remember watching them, wishing I could do that too, because it looked so fun.

Pull out some random memory & lets hear what you remember from long ago...

Whoa! Grandma made them do that? What did she make them do when she found them playing ant hospital?!

Okay, random memory: I remember when I was in the first grade and my teacher pulled me into the coat closet to ask me about why I was going out of town (this all of the sudden seems like a strange thing for her to do). And I told her that I was going to be a flower girl at my aunt Bonnie's wedding reception. I still remember that brown and peach dress I wore.

Grma has commented on the Matches a couple of times, and how they thought it was fun to begin with and then after awhile decided it wasn't.

My first memory is when I was three, and I got my tooth knocked out. I think I remember this, mostly because it was a tramatic experience (to a three year old). I agree it is amazing what things you remember with clarity.

Andria - That peach dress is still hanging in a closet in my basement. It was a hand-me-down for Emilie - I have held onto it...as well as this other really cute dress of your's that was made from the same pattern of a dress your mother had.

Wow! That dress still exists. That's really cool. I hope someday some other little girl gets to wear it. :D

Okay. I remember learning America The Beautiful in kindergarten and being so confused by the whole "purple mountains majesty" line that I cried. Then the aide pulled me out into the hall to ask me why I was crying.

I also remember playing ant hospital with Andria, because our moms had told us about doing it, and we thought it sounded fun.

We also played Cardinal Puff because our moms taught it to us.

OK, I've been thinking about this, and I've got a couple of memories I'll contribute later this week...stay tuned.

As for the matches, I have a memory of that I'll offer up: Kim and I also got in trouble for playing with matches, and were punished the same way, by being made to burn an entire box of matches on the back porch. Each one had to be burned until it was completely black.

However, Mom didn't have the patience to stand and watch us the whole time, so we quickly figured out a superior strategy. First, we'd burn the match until it was nearly down to our fingers. Then we'd blow it out, let it cool, and flip it around and burn the rest of it black with the next match.

What have you created today?
